National Wills Week 2026: Why having a will matters

National Wills Week runs from 14–18 September 2026, giving South Africans an opportunity to have a basic will drafted free of charge by participating attorneys. Introduced by the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) in 2008, the initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of having a valid will to ensure your assets are distributed according to your final wishes.

Writing a will is often put off, but it isn’t only for the wealthy or elderly. It is about making your wishes clear, nominating guardians for minor children, appointing executors, and protecting your loved ones from delays and uncertainty.

While a DIY approach may seem appealing, Engelize Hitchcock from Sentinel International Trust warns that poorly drafted or incorrectly executed DIY wills often lead to costly tax implications, disputes, and severe delays.

 Living Annuities & Life Annuities

Note: Pre-retirement funds are governed by Section 37C of the Pension Funds Act. In the event of death, a board of trustees distributes these benefits to proven financial dependents (spouses, children, or other dependents) regardless of will instructions.
